For tech-savvy users, Proxy SwitchyOmega supports Proxy Auto-Configuration (PAC) scripts, enabling highly granular control over proxy behaviors. These scripts can define which proxies to use under specific conditions, making it ideal for complex workflows.

Once your profiles are configured, you can back them up to a local file and restore them later. This feature is especially useful for users managing proxies across multiple devices or as a safeguard against data loss.
- Compatibility with Various Proxy Types
Proxy SwitchyOmega supports SOCKS5, HTTP, and HTTPS proxies, ensuring versatility for different use cases, from secure connections to faster web scraping.
- Intuitive User Interface
The interface is designed with simplicity in mind. Settings are logically arranged, making it easy for beginners to set up basic proxies while offering enough depth for experts to configure advanced options.
- Bypass List
Users can create a bypass list of trusted websites that don’t need proxy routing. This not only speeds up connections to these sites but also conserves bandwidth for limited proxies.
How to Use SwitchyOmega
Here are the steps on how to use SwitchyOmega to switch between different proxies. We used Oxylabs residential proxies to test the extension.
Testing an HTTP Proxy
- Install chrome extension from Chrome Web Store
- Enable the extension and you will see the main options as below:
- Click on the “Options” link to configure your proxy server.
- On left menu, you will see different proxy profiles. This is list of different proxy servers that you can configure and then switch between them.
- Click on “New Profile” to add details of a proxy server. In this case, we are adding an HTTP proxy server.
- Provide the name for the proxy profile as below:
- Click on “Create” to create the proxy profile. Note that you still need to provide proxy details like address, port, etc.
- Enter the following information as below:
- Protocol (http, socks4, socks5, etc.) We will select “HTTP” here since we are adding an HTTP proxy.
- URL of proxy server
- Port
- If the proxy server requires authentication then you should add user name and password by clicking on the lock icon on right side.
- After you save the credentials, the lock will turn green which means the credentials are attached with proxy profile.
- That is it, the proxy profile is ready now. Let’s test this out. Just select the “Oxylabs HTTP Proxy” from the list as shown below:
- You can check your IP address would be changed as soon as you select this proxy. It is super easy to switch between different proxies this way. Just select the requires proxy from the list and that’s it.
- If you want to turn of the proxies, just click on “[System Proxy]” with a power icon, it will turn off any proxy you already activated for your system.
Testing a Socks5 Proxy
Since chrome does not support Socks5, we will test this on firefox.
!!! Note that the SwitchyOmega Chrome extension is not being maintained actively.
- Install the firefox extension from FireFox Browser Addons Store
!!! Note that here the name of the extension is ZeroOmera not SwitchyOmega, although it is the same product.
- It has the same interface as the Chrome extension. Go to “Options” and add a new proxy profile just like we did in Chrome.
- Add details of the proxy including credentials information as below.
- You can also specify Servers for which you do not want to use any proxy: (One server on each line.) see below Bypass List:
- Now you can select the Socks5 proxy from the extension. See below:
- If you check your IP, you will see the proxy IP instead of your own IP.

Cons of Proxy SwitchyOmega
- Steeper Learning Curve for Advanced Features
While the basic setup is straightforward, advanced features like PAC scripts and rule-based configurations can overwhelm less tech-savvy users. Tutorials and documentation may be needed to unlock its full potential. - Limited to Browser Use
Proxy SwitchyOmega is restricted to browser-level proxy management. It cannot manage system-wide proxies, which limits its utility for applications and tools outside the browser. Competitors like Proxifier address this gap effectively. - Chrome Warning about Possible Removal in Future
Chrome web store has added a warning “This extension may soon no longer be supported because it doesn’t follow best practices for Chrome extensions.”. This may turn off the users who value security and authenticity above all. - No Built-in Proxy Marketplace
Unlike tools like Bright Data Proxy Manager, Proxy SwitchyOmega doesn’t provide an integrated marketplace for purchasing proxies. Users must acquire proxies externally, which can add an extra step to the process. - Experimental Cross-Device Syncing
While the extension offers syncing capabilities, this feature remains experimental and can be unreliable. Users needing seamless syncing across devices might need to explore other options. - Lacks Modern Enhancements
Proxy SwitchyOmega, being a free and open-source tool, lacks some modern enhancements found in paid solutions, such as AI-driven automation, detailed analytics, or user-friendly onboarding wizards. - No Mobile App Support
The extension doesn’t support mobile browsers natively, which might be a dealbreaker for users seeking a consistent experience across desktop and mobile platforms. - Potential for Performance Bottlenecks
Heavy rule-based configurations or the use of high-latency proxies can sometimes lead to slower browsing experiences, especially for users unaware of how to optimize their settings.
